MIDO Exhibition Vol.2
Tomorrow is the last day of the MIDO exhibition.
I enjoy discovering new things every day, but I am not ready to output them in time. I will slowly introduce you a little bit at a time.
You may imagine that an exhibition of eyeglasses only displays eyeglass frames, but in fact all products related to eyeglasses are on display, including not only eyeglass frames, but also eyeglass lenses, machines for sharpening lenses, machines for inspecting eyes, contact lenses, and more. For example, not only eyeglass frames, but also eyeglass lenses, lens grinding machines, eye examination machines, contact lenses, etc.
Each of these areas is divided into sections for efficient viewing. The first area I will introduce to you is the most flashy area.
This is the section where the so-called "super-brands" that everyone knows, such as GUCCI, PRADA, and RAY-BAN, gather. The amount of money spent on the booths and the size of the booths are extraordinary compared to the other sections.
There are major planning and manufacturing companies such as Luxottica, Safilo, and Deligo, which have contracted with major famous brands to make glasses and distribute them to the whole world and sell them to eyeglass retailers. Of course, there is a branch office in Japan, but we have not stocked super brands for more than 10 years.
In Europe and North America, their power is so huge that they seem to be becoming an oligopoly of the entire eyeglass sales network, from manufacturing and planning to retail sales. That is why they create such luxurious and cool booths at the exhibitions.
Although we do not offer this service, it is a very useful way to make good use of video in presentations.
This is the lens section.
This is the booth of HOYA, which is handled by our store.
In addition to HOYA, there were many other lens manufacturers exhibiting, including Essilor, Zeiss, Rodenstock, Tokai Kogaku, and even lens manufacturers whose names I had never heard of.
This machine is not yet available in Japan, but it is a custom-made eyeglass making system using a 3D printer proposed by HOYA. The 3D printer makes both the spectacle frames and lenses custom-made to fit the customer's needs by measuring all the facial dimensions and eye positions. The base design of the frames was done by HOET, a famous Belgian brand. It looks very futuristic.
The newest lens that is very popular in our storeIndivisual Lens."I got the impression that each company put the most effort into introducing the measuring instruments used in the production of eyeglass lenses. There were also many elaborate hardware products from various companies to introduce the next generation of eyeglass lenses to customers in an easy-to-understand manner.
Also available in Japan, it is a wavefront aberrometer that measures the corneal shape of the eye. It is a completely medical machine used for cataract and LASIK preoperative examinations. Recently, I have heard some discussion about the possibility of utilizing this in eyeglass prescriptions as well. I am looking forward to the future development of this field.
That's about it for today.
